Giant Mutant Insects Take Over North Alabama

I am really curious what this is. I came across it at church tonight. I've never seen anything like it and it defies identification (at least with my rudimentary knowledge of insects).


It's about 3 inches long and doesn't seem to belong to any insect family I can find.

  4. Thanks, Thomas! That got me on the right track. After some digging, I found out that it wasn't a brown lacewing (they are usually about a half-inch long; this things was about 3 inches). But with that as a starting point, I did figure out that this was a female dobsonfly. More later...
